The Nolichucky Dam in Greene County was in danger of failing overnight, according to the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The dam was placed under Condition Red Warning of Imminent Breach, which means that conditions developed that could lead to an imminent breach. Those conditions included lack of visibility of the dam, along with the rate of rise.
According to the TVA, potentially life-threatening flooding could occur as far downstream as Douglas Reservoir if the dam was breached. Evacuations in Hamblen County began after midnight.
