The Greene County School Board of Education approved several items on their agenda on Thursday including budgets for ESSER 3 Funds (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief), Save the Children, and the county school budget (General Purpose Fund) for Fiscal Year 2024-25.
Director of Schools David McLain said ESSER funds have really helped with projects at the schools and have covered about 80%. Chairman Rick Tipton spoke briefly on the Save the Children program and mentioned how much work people at the program are doing for all the children. A $2,200 raise was approved for all teachers in Greene County Schools beginning in the 2024 Fiscal Year on July 1st in addition to a step. All across the board teachers will receive a step. The salary difference will depend however on years of experience.
During the meeting the board discussed a contract between Greene County Schools and the Boys and Girls Club of Greeneville/Greene County. The contract is to allow the club to use the county school buses to transport the children this summer. According to the Chairman Tipton, the number of kids at the Boys and Girls club is exceeding the number of kids that are able to be on the bus. Insurance between the two will first need to be settled and County Attorney Roger Woolsey will need to give legal approval of the contract before the board can move forward.
Also during the meeting, several were recognized during the End of Year Awards including teachers, staff, and retirees. Tamara Wykle at West Greene Middle School received the Principal of the Year Award, Larry Kelton at Mosheim Elementary received the Judy Thompson Phillips Lifetime Contribution to Education Award, and Olivia Kuper at North Greene High School received the Outstanding Service to Students Award.
