Greene County Enrollment Numbers Down Slightly As School Year Begins

Although less than two weeks into the school year is not enough time for enrollment numbers to stabilize, early numbers in the Greene County School System are about 70 students below this time one year ago.

Director of Schools Dr. Chris Malone updated the enrollment figures with school board members during a facilities workshop on Tuesday.

Currently at the elementary level Mosheim has 655 enrolled, Doak 506, Baileyton 381 in grades Pre-K through 4th grade, Chuckey 338, Nolachuckey 323, Camp Creek 293 and McDonald 211.

Malone says Kindergarten numbers are not as high system wide as had been projected for the 2025-2026 school year, roughly five years removed from the beginning of Covid.

County Middle School numbers show West Greene at 419, Chuckey Doak 378,  South Greene 302 and North Greene at 240, which includes 59 fifth graders not able to attend Baileyton due to space limitations.

Chuckey Doak had the largest high school enrollment at 537, followed by West Greene at 470, South Greene at 462 and North Greene with 307 enrolled as of last Friday.

Current enrollment stands at 5643.  Malone says he expects those numbers to increase over the next few weeks, which is normal during the early part of school years.

While it does not affect local school systems, for informational purposes, the TSSAA, the states governing body for athletics, waits six weeks into the school year before it requires numbers from member schools in order to plan for classifications based on enrollment size.

A complete look at the early enrollment numbers, by school and by grade, are listed on the chart below.
