A Greene County man reported an attempted scam to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday.
The man said he received a call on Tuesday that he had won $4 million and a new car in the lottery. The caller asked for the man’s banking information, which he provided, then told the man that $51,000 would be deposited into his account and that he was to write a check to himself for $48,000.
When the man went to the bank, he told the caller that it was closed, at which time he was told to go to the nearest drug store to buy a pair of $500 gift cards. The man said he could not find the gift cards and asked a worker, who told him he was probably being scammed. The man then hung up on the caller.
On Wednesday, the man went to his bank and closed his account. The man also stated that he had given his Social Security number to the caller.
