The Greeneville City Council approved the 2024-25 Fiscal Year budget yesterday after a Public Hearing and second reading. The balanced budget of $35.9M does not include a tax increase this year and is about $2M less than the 2023-24 FY budget.
According to Lora Young, Finance Director and City Recorder, the budget for Fiscal Year 2023-24 was more because of the Depot Street Project. The council approved this years budget on (1st reading) earlier this month for around $34M. The budget since the first reading increased because of an additional $125,000 that was added to include funds for a one-time Capitol Project for Greeneville City Schools.
William Sherrill and Jeff Farr were selected to serve on the Greeneville Historic Zoning Commission and John Loven was chosen to the Town vacancy on the Industrial Development Board of Greene County for a six-year term.
The request to fill the vacant seat on the IDB Board was tabled in a previous meeting after a motion by Councilman Tim Teague, who requested clarification on qualifications to serve on the board. Candidates included Paige Mengel, Danny Venerable, Shane Hite, and John Loven.
Since the last discussion in May, candidate Venerable had to withdraw due to personal reasons, and Mengel did not qualify to serve on the board. Teague made a motion to vote for Shane Hite with a second from Councilwoman Ginny Kidwell. There was also a motion from Councilman Scott Bullington to vote for John Loven, with a second from Councilman Tim Ward. Mayor Cal Doty had to step in because of the tiebreaker and voted for John Loven.
