A Flag Branch Road man reported a scam to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department on Monday.
The victim is a self-employed contractor. He received an email around two weeks ago from the suspect, who said he lives in Minnesota and is moving to a residence on Jennings Creek Road in Greeneville.
The suspect said he found the victim’s business page on Facebook and wanted the victim to replace the interior doors on the house he is purchasing. The suspect claimed he worked for a flooring company and they were paying for the renovations to the home.
The suspect sent the victim a check for $6,500. The victim was told he could keep $1,500 for doing the job, but he needed to send the remaining $5,000 in money orders to the alleged owner of the business who would be supplying all of the doors.
The victim said the suspect mailed him the check through FedEX. The victim deposited the check into his bank account on July 20 and then sent $5,000 in money orders by UPS.
The victim then had issues logging into his bank account. He went to his bank and discovered his account had been locked and the check he had deposited had been discovered to be fraudulent. The victim was advised by his bank to file a police report regarding the incident.
