Weather Update: Winter Storm Warning In Effect Until Tuesday Morning

Afternoon Update: Temperatures across parts of Greene County have hovered just above freezing, and much of our immediate area has seen light rain after the earlier snowfall. But there are different accumulation amounts across the region.  Northern and western Greene County have seen more snowfall.  Washington County has also gotten more snow in some areas.  And interstates in Knoxville are covered with snow at this time.

Meteorologist Lyle Wilson said that the late afternoon and evening will see a wintry mix of rain, sleet, and snow that will change over to all snow before ending overnight.  Additional accumulation is still possible, although much of the earlier snowfall has melted.

Roadways range from clear to snow covered, with many roads slushy.  Lows in the 20s tonight can cause those spots to freeze and become very slick.  Lows in the single digits tomorrow night will also refreeze roadways.

The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7AM Tuesday.

Greeneville City and Greene County Schools are closed.  All ETSU classes and offices are closed.

Meteorologist Jeremy Buckles said that regardless of the final snow amounts, extremely cold temperatures are on the way, with wind chills making it feel like 0 degrees. For the next 72 hours temperatures will feel close to freezing, especially across higher elevations and ridge tops. The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Following the snow, high temperatures are likely to remain below freezing for much of the area through the work week, with near zero low temperatures Wednesday morning. Below zero wind chills are also likely Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Another round of snow is expected Thursday night and Friday. Very cold temperatures are likely again Friday night through the weekend with single digits to below zero wind chills possible.
