Medic Regional Blood Center says there is an urgent need for O blood type donations. Type O blood is the most common type of blood, and it is seen as “universal” because it can be received by all blood types.
The supply of O-Negative and O-Positive blood types has sharply decreased in the last week. Medic says the O-Negative inventory is now critically low with less than a 3-day supply on hand. The O-Positive inventory has less than a 5-day supply. The blood supply on hand is what would be used in a trauma event.
O-Negative blood is the most common blood type requested. O-Positive blood is often used when the patient’s blood type is unknown. Some type O donations are also the safest choice for newborn infants with compatible blood types.
All donated blood takes 3 days of processing before it can be distributed.
Eligible donors are encouraged to donate as soon as possible. All O-Negative and O-Positive donors will receive a $25 e-gift card with their successful donation.
You can donate at all donor centers and mobile blood drives. Appointments are not required, but are encouraged. Appointments can be made online at http://www.medicblood.org/ or by calling 865-524-3074. Walk-ins are welcome.
