A man involved in a motor vehicle accident Sunday morning before 3 AM that was airlifted to the Johnson City Medical Center has died from his injuries, according to the Mosheim Police Department. Speed and alcohol are believed to have been a factor in the crash.
James R. Gibson was found lying in the center of Phillipi Church Road after a Mosheim Police Officer responded to a crash near the West Andrew Johnson Highway.
His vehicle was located sitting up an embankment on right side of the road. After investigating, officers believe Gibson was traveling eastbound on the highway and slipped off the road, causing him to overcorrect. Gibson reportedly overcorrected and the truck skid, crossing the road, and struck an embankment. The truck is believed to have went airborne and when it came back down it appears the truck may have rolled, causing Gibson to be ejected from the vehicle.
Further investigation lead the Mosheim Police Officers to respond to the Gap Bar and Grill. Staff confirmed Gibson was at the bar and said they stopped serving him around midnight. They also stated they believe he got into an altercation with a woman before leaving in his truck. They did advise Gibson not to leave but stated he still left.
Empty beer cans were reportedly found on the ground on the scene and another inside the truck. It is believed that Gibson was also reportedly not wearing a seatbelt.
