The Greene County Board of Education met yesterday afternoon and heard from the Director of Schools David McLain, who gave some insight into the damage that was done from the weather this month like the windstorm.
South Greene Middle School, South Greene High School, Nolachuckey and Camp Creek Elementary School got the most damage. McLain said an awning was lost at camp creek and damage was made to the Greene House.
The most expensive damage was to the roof at the South Greene High School; McLain said winds pulled the roof up from the middle and right now they’re in the process of getting the new roof on. There were also a lot of trees down at South Greene and there were power issues that had a negative affect on the elevators. Nolachuckey also had some trees down from the windstorm and got some damage to their gym. Additionally there were a few outbuildings with some shingles and fencing that got damaged.
McLain added that Greene County Schools have five snow days left and one virtual day per semester if needed. The board discussed ways to utilize the snow days best and will be considering the best option as winter is not yet over and the weather can be unpredictable. He stated unlike other districts they are not in panic mode.
School Board member Larry Bible shared he was recently questioned on school closings. He wanted to clarify for residents who may not know, that school closings are decided by the Director of Schools and if he makes that call it’s because weather conditions could be dangerous. This past windstorm on January 12th was a perfect example of why schools close, even if it’s just wind. Some areas of the county don’t get the same weather as other areas.
Board member Mark Rothe added the Director is looking out for the safety of the students. Both agree there hasn’t been one call made that they didn’t support.
