Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has appointed longtime Greene County auctioneer Wayne Bettis to serve on the Tennessee Auctioneer Commission as a commissioner member.

In his confirmation letter, the governor’s office praised Bettis for his “exceptional individual characteristics and professional qualifications” among the nominees considered. His appointment takes effect immediately and runs through August 31, 2028, with his first commission meeting set for November 17, 2025, in Nashville.

As a commissioner, Bettis will help oversee the licensing and regulation of auctioneers and apprentice auctioneers across the state. His duties include reviewing professional education, enforcing conduct standards, regulating public automobile auctions, ensuring escrow protections, and taking disciplinary action when necessary. He will also participate in commission operations such as adopting bylaws, administering exams, and maintaining fair and transparent practices within the auction industry.

A licensed auctioneer since 1976, Bettis co-owns Carters & Bettis Auction Company and resides with his wife, Judy, on their farm in the Camp Creek community.
