Greene County Sheriff Wesley Holt addresses commissioners concerning constable positions prior to the vote

By a vote of 15 to 6 on the first of two readings, the Greene County Commission voted last night to abolish County Constable positions.

VOTING TO ABOLISH CONSTABLE POSITIONS

Kiker (sponsor), Crawford, Gunter, White, Peters, Quillen, Smithson, Dabbs, Carpenter, Bowers, Shelton, Waddle, Bible, Anderson, Lawing

VOTING TO NOT ABOLISH CONSTABLE POSITIONS

Arrowood, Murray, Cobble, Parton, Clemmer, Burkey

Commissioner Lloyd “Hoot” Bowers, as did several who spoke prior to the vote, argued the vote was not against one person per se, but instead against the position.

Commissioner Teddy Lawing also believes the constable position is an outdated need.

The second reading on the resolution to abolish the position, which also requires a 2/3rds vote for approval, will be held at the November meeting.
