Two civil lawsuits against the Greeneville City School system and others remain active in Greene County Circuit Court.
One suit deals with the death of Kaden Gunter following injuries during Greeneville Middle School football practice in September of 2023 .
The other relates to a then eleven-year-old and injuries he received during a golf tournament his Greeneville Middle School team was participating in March of 2024.
KADEN GUNTER
Coleman and Breanna Gunter, parents of Kaden Gunter, filed suit for damages against the City of Greeneville, Greeneville City School System, Greeneville City School District and the Greeneville City Board of Education. This suit was filed in September of last year, a year following the fatal incident. The plaintiffs claim in their suit the coaches at the practice September 19,2023 failed to take responsible steps to aid their son, failed to provide basic first aid and failed to call 9-1-1 within a reasonable time. The suit indicates when Greeneville Fire Department arrived, their son was unresponsive and when placed on a monitor, had no pulse. The suit indicates he passed away as a direct and proximate cause of the negligence of the employees acting within the course and scope of their employment who were charged with keeping him safe. The most recent legal filing in the Gunter matter was in November of 2024.
DOUTHAT SUIT
The suit, filed on his behalf by parents Leslie Douthat and Thomas Lester, is against Amy Ricker and the Greeneville City Board of Education. The plaintiffs allege Ricker and the Board of Education were at fault when their son fell from a golf cart driven by Ricker while a member of the golf team during a school sanctioned event. They are seeking no less than $850,000 in damages for serious and disabling injuries to their son, medical bills as well as pain and suffering. The most recent legal response to the case was in June of this year.
