Two people were injured Friday night when a car plunged approximately 60 feet down an embankment near Paint Creek during a period of heavy rain.
The accident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. near 1072 Lower Paint Creek Road. South Greene Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Weems said the driver told responders she lost control of the vehicle in the rain and went off the roadway.
The driver was able to climb up the embankment and reach a nearby home, where Emergency Medical Services were called. The passenger, who reportedly had her feet on the dashboard at the time of the crash, suffered more serious injuries and was found lying beside the wreckage.
Volunteers from the South Greene Fire Department were joined by members of the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad, Greene County EMS and the Greene County Sheriff’s Department in carrying the injured passenger up the embankment to a waiting ambulance.
Highlands Air Rescue was dispatched to the scene but was unable to respond due to a thunderstorm in the area.
Both the driver and passenger were transported by EMS for treatment of their injuries.
