Both an individual and a local business report they were victims of fraud this week.
Officers were called to a local gas station and spoke with an employee Friday, who said she had received a call from someone who claimed to be calling on behalf of the business’ owner. The employee was told it was important to collect money from the register and money from the office, and to exchange the money for Bitcoin.
The employee stated the caller mentioned items in the office that only the owner should know about, and convinced her that the owner needed the money to deal with some other issue.
She deposited the money at two Bitcoin kiosks on Andrew Johnson Highway. The employee found out it was a scam after contacting the manager.
The business lost over $3,700, while the individual is out around $400.
