The Kinser Bridge over the Erwin Highway collapsed shortly after 6:00 PM today. The bridge was closed at the time. There were no injuries.
According to information from the Federal Highway Administration, the Kinser Bridge opened in 1951 and carried more than 11,000 vehicles per day.
The Earnest Bridge on Chuckey Pike, the Jones Bridge on Jones Bridge Road, Bird’s Bridge on Bird’s Bridge Road all closed earlier today as debris began stacking up behind them and water began running over them, threatening their safety.
The Lovette Bridge on Asheville Highway is now closed as well.
The Newport Highway bridge is the only bridge that remains open.
