The Walkers, an original script written by Jack Truman, will be filmed here in Eastern Tennessee this summer. Truman, the new Director of Theatre at Walters State, hopes that by bringing this project to the local area, the community can learn about the connection between theatre and film. Being the writer, he will also direct the micro budget film.
The Walkers is a no budget female led thriller about a serial killer who works in a furniture store. Truman has been wanting to shoot this movie for years. “No one makes a movie about subjects like this. And anyone can make a movie. I’m living proof. You don’t need a lot of money. All you need is a camera and a computer. It’s going to be a lot of fun to shoot this here in the area this summer.”
Truman is a 35-year veteran in the entertainment industry. He brings a wealth of experience to the area. An award-winning actor, writer and director, he has also appeared in many major pictures and television series. An award-winning filmmaker for over 15 years, his independent films have screened at over 600 film festivals around the world. Founder of the Holly Weird Film Festival in Los Angeles, Truman was recently honored by the state of Tennessee for becoming the Eastern Tennessee Board Representative for the Tennessee Theatre Association, which represents high schools across the state.
“It’s important for people in the community to learn about the connection between theatre and film”, Truman says in press materials. “That’s one thing we teach here at Walters State. If I can show the community the importance of this, a lot is accomplished. Movies and theatre are a lot more alike than people think. Each is a product that goes through a similar process of being made, then that product is distributed, based on entertainment needs. A local play may be distributed to a community. A film is distributed through many different methods around the world. This is just one example of how they are similar.”
Last week, a free staged reading event of the screenplay was held at the Morristown campus, to introduce the community to this project. Cast members from the reading consisted of locals in the Morristown and Greeneville theatre communities, as well as actors who travelled from several different states, including the Nashville area.
