The Greene County Commission approved a resolution to adopt the newly designed Flag, proposed for Greene County and created by the Greene County Mayor, county employees, and citizens of the community.
According to the resolution, the flag was created after a request from the state of Tennessee. Shortly before the State Fair last summer the county was asked to support a County Centric Display as one of the states 95 counties that the fair was planning to showcase. The flag needed to represent Greene County, its people and history, and its role in making Tennessee the greatest in the Union.
Greene County, founded in 1783, didn’t have a flag at the time of the request. The flag that was put together had to easily identify Greene County, be simple and cost effective to reproduce, descriptive of the geography, free of political statements or political colors, impartial and uniform in color, void of specific school color schemes or community mascots, representative of all people and each of the municipalities, and be a banner that pays homage to Greene County’s historical heritage, ties to early education, and our leadership in agriculture and commerce.
All other items on the agenda were approved including a revised agreement on behalf of Greene County with the Town of Greeneville, to operate the Greeneville/Greene County Solid Waste Transfer Station and Active /Inactive Landfills, and the allocation of County-Aid Funds allotted to Greene County, to help with improvements to county roads, labor, equipment, and materials.
