The Greeneville/Greene County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program took a stylish and sustainable turn as participants showcased their creativity at this week’s Trashion Show. This unique event challenged individuals of all ages to transform discarded materials into outfits and fashion accessories, all while promoting taking care of our environment.
Held on the library’s blue tarp runway, the Trashion Show showcased the imagination of the community as participants strutted their stuff, proudly displaying their upcycled fashion creations. From dresses made of newspaper and plastic bags to armor crafted from cardboard and aluminum foil, the runway was adorned with inspiring displays of resourcefulness and ingenuity.
To engage the wider community, the library is inviting people to vote for their favorite trashion designs on their website. Trophies crafted from recycled materials will be awarded next Tuesday in three categories: Best Outfit, Best Accessory, and Best Wild and Wacky Design. This not only recognizes the participants’ remarkable efforts but also reinforces the importance of repurposing and reducing waste.
The Trashion Show was just one of the highlights of the library’s All Together Now Summer Reading Program, which has been running successfully for four weeks and has seen more than a hundred participants each week so far. Throughout the program, the library has been committed to offering educational and entertaining activities for children and families. This week’s special guest, Eleanor G’fellers, engaged the kids in learning about plants and gardening and shared take home plant starter kits, fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and sustainability.
Moreover, the children had the opportunity to mark their literal footprint in the world through a thought-provoking craft. Young participants were encouraged to reflect on their individual impact and decorate their foot with ways they can make positive changes.
Next week the festivities will conclude with a wrap-up celebration. The exceptional success of the Summer Reading Program would not have been possible without the support of dedicated volunteers and the contributions of special guests, who on previous weeks included police and firemen offering tours of their vehicles, yoga and dance demonstrations, and a special mini-theater workshop.
To mark the occasion, Creamy Cup will be providing frozen treats to celebrate the achievements of the participants and the community’s commitment to literacy, creativity, and healthy communities.
