Volunteers with the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad and officers with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department helped a lost hiker find her way out of the mountains Thursday night.
A hiker called 9-1-1 just before 7:00 PM to say that she had gotten lost. She had driven to Jones Meadow on Viking Mountain. She said she had walked out the Appalachian Trail and was unsure of how to get back. The AT follows the ridgeline from the top of Camp Creek Bald out to an area called Fire Scald Ridge. The hiker had continued beyond that ridge and had reportedly gone about two miles beyond the Jerry Cabin, a shelter that is located above Greystone Mountain. That shelter is around 4 miles from the parking area.
Another hiker had come upon the lost woman and was able to help describe to rescue members the woman’s location and give her directions back to the parking area. Rescue Squad volunteers met the woman around 8:30 PM and were able to lead her back to the parking area around 9:15 PM.
Nine members of the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad, two deputies from the Sheriff’s Department, and Sheriff Welsey Holt all assisted in the rescue.
