Greeneville City Council To Move Forward With Safe Haven Baby Box

The Greeneville City Council will be moving forward on the Safe Haven Baby Box pitch for Greene County after it was brought up again during the Greeneville City Council meeting.

A baby box is a safe and secure location for birth mothers who are unable to care for their newborn and want to surrender their baby while remaining anonymous. It’s a temperature-controlled box that automatically locks after placing the baby inside. It immediately triggers an alarm to the fire department station and triggers a ping to dispatch 911.

The baby box was originally brought before the city council by two Greeneville natives and adoptive mother‘s, Madi Bakker and Lauren Bible, who took the steps necessary in order to have a Safe Haven Baby Box in town. Last year in April it was approved unanimously. Now the city council will consider final approval in a future meeting. According to Councilman Tim Teague, the baby box could be set up within weeks.
