Most areas of the Cherokee National Forest that were closed because of the winds and floods from Hurricane Helene have reopened.
Campgrounds in both the Unaka and Watauga districts will remain closed for the remainder of the year. Portions portions of the Appalanchian Trail in Carter County remain closed. In some areas, hundreds of trees per mile block the route.
There may still be some areas where visitors will encounter downed trees or damaged roadways, and caution should be used in any areas.
Greene County areas are mostly open, but the Bumpass Cove area in Unicoi County and the areas around the Rock Creek Recreation area were hard hit in Unicoi County. Large areas in Carter County in the Watauga district remain closed. The Dennis Cove Recreation Area and areas around Roan Mountain remain closed.
