Greeneville, TN — Green Interchange is calling on volunteers to join environmental leaders Saturday, October 25th in Greene County as part of ongoing efforts to restore the Nolichucky River’s forests.
On that day, the organization will be looking for 100 plus volunteers to help plant over 2000 trees just outside Greeneville on the banks of the Nolichucky River.
According to Dr. John McFadden, CEO of Green Interchange, “The forests of East TN were devastated by Helene, estimates upwards of $58 million in forest resource value was lost during the storm. Of these forests none were more valuable than those on the river bank as they absorb flood waters, filter our drinking water supply and provide habitat for wildlife.
Among our many sponsors TVA, The Arbor Day Foundation and Appalachian RCD all support clean water and healthy forests. “TVA is proud to partner with our community and other agencies to help ongoing Hurricane Helene recovery efforts,” said Michael McCall, TVA Vice President of Environment & Stewardship.
“These trees will stabilize the riverbank, re-establish a mature forest, and restore critical habitat, making the area more resilient to extreme events in the future.”
It’s a great opportunity to volunteer, come out and connect with your community, protect and restore the Nolichucky River, learn tree planting and restoration techniques from local experts.
Sign up is required: Interested volunteers can sign up at https://www.greeninterchange.org/nolichucky-river.html.
Thanks to our sponsors: TVA, Arbor Day Foundation, Appalachian RCD, Appalachian Watershed Alliance, US FWS, TN Environmental Council, and NRCS.
