The Andrew Johnson Homestead will be closed to the public until further notice after a faulty electrical line caused smoke throughout the building Thursday.
A park statement says the alarm company alerted the Greeneville Fire Department who quickly joined park staff on the scene.
There was no fire, only smoke. The smoke was traced to an older underground electrical line which shorted, causing damage to the line. The resulting smoke traveled through the electrical conduit and into a ground floor room.
Facility supervisor Josh Hines says park staff will coordinate the replacement of the damaged electrical line and then inspect the areas where it entered the homestead to ensure that the structural integrity of the home hasn’t been compromised.
Until the homestead is fully evaluated and a new electrical line installed, the homestead will remain closed to public access until further notice.
