Greene County Register of Deeds Karen Ottinger is cautioning residents about a letter that may appear to come from a government office but offers a service that is unnecessary.
Ottinger said several residents have reported receiving letters claiming to be from the Greene County Clerk’s Office. The mailings request $89 in exchange for a property deed, but the return address is listed as a post office box in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The letters may or may not provide the service promised, Ottinger said, but they are not required. Citizens are already entitled to a free copy of their property deed by visiting the Register of Deeds office in Greeneville.
Ottinger said her office does not send out such requests and advised residents to read the letters carefully. The envelopes themselves indicate they come from Florida.
Officials encourage residents to disregard the mailings and obtain any property records directly from the county.
