Greene County Road Superintendent Kevin Swatsell said today repair work on the flood-damaged Birds Bridge will officially begin again this coming Monday, August 25. Crews from Summers-Taylor are mobilizing equipment this week in preparation for the project. The estimated timeline for completion is 7 to 8 weeks, barring any unforeseen delays. Radio Greeneville News visited the site in July as TDOT inspectors were on the scene.
Following that thorough inspection, it was determined that 27 of the 48 intermediate diaphragms beneath the bridge were damaged by flood debris. Of those, 15 can be repaired in place, while 12 require additional fabrication off-site.
The project will be funded through State-Aid funds, which are distributed to county highway departments across Tennessee from state gas tax revenues. These funds are designated specifically for qualifying road and bridge repairs in all 95 counties.
