The storm which roared across the area last Wednesday toppled trees and resulted in property damage throughout the city and county.
The Andrew Johnson National Cemetery was not exempt from the damage, with the historic flagpole that has stood in the cemetery for over one hundred years damaged, but the most extensive damage was to the cemetery landscape.
Four large trees were lost, according to Facilities Supervisor Josh Hines. Hundreds of pounds of limb debris also came down. A sawyer crew from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and staff and equipment from Greeneville’s very own Public Works Department worked to clear the debris.
Hines says because of the rapid assistance from both, the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery was able to reopen in just four days.
