For the first time since their back-to-back TSSAA state championships in 2022, the Greeneville Greene Devils returned to the Murphy Center for first-round action. After a tightly contested first half, they used timely shooting to pull away for a 63-46 victory over Munford.
The opening half saw both teams battling evenly, with Greeneville holding a slim 14-12 lead after the first quarter and a 27-24 advantage at halftime. Mr. Basketball finalist Trey Thompson led the way with 11 points, while Zaydyn Anderson added 7.
Despite cooling off to 40% shooting in the third quarter (4-for-10 from the field, 0-for-4 from three), Greeneville maintained control. The Cougars’ Jaydyn Lee, who finished with 30 points, kept his team in the game, but the Greene Devils still led 41-36 heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Greeneville’s offense erupted. Thompson, Anderson, and their teammates were nearly flawless, hitting 7-of-7 from the field, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. They also missed just one free throw while outscoring the Cougars 22-12 to seal the win.
Thompson posted a dominant double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds, while Anderson finished with 13 points. Cole Franklin added 9, and Isaac McGill contributed 8 in a solid team effort.
With the win, Greeneville advances to the semifinals, where they will face Upperman on Friday at 4 PM Central, 5PM Eastern. Upperman earned their spot with a 54-40 victory over Hume-Fogg.
