A Jonesborough doctor has been charged with aggravated rape and sexual battery, according to a news release from the Johnson City Police Department.
68-year-old Dr. Atif Atyia of Jonesborough was arrested Tuesday following an investigation conducted by the JCPD Special Victims Unit that was launched on February 19. A patient under Dr. Atyia’s care reported to the Johnson City Police Department that she was raped during an office visit.
As part of the investigation, police executed a search warrant at Dr. Atyia’s practice on West Market Street in Johnson City. The JCPD and the Office of the District Attorney presented the case to the Washington County Grand Jury this week, which issued a true bill.
Dr. Atyia was transported to the Washington County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $50,000 bond.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the crime, the Johnson City Police Department is asking any other potential victims to contact Sgt. Shane Williams with the JCPD Special Victims Unit at (423) 434-6110.
