Traffic flow on East Andrew Johnson Highway at Serral Drive should be getting some much needed help early next year. Town Planner Randy Davenport told the Greeneville Municipal Planning Commission Tuesday morning that work on the signal light near the new Texas Roadhouse and other projects should be ready by early next year.
“Once we saw what was going to be happening on that site (Texas Roadhouse area), we very quickly determined that due to the volume of traffic that was going to be generated by not only the Texas Roadhouse, but other developments, that a traffic signal at the intersection with Serral Drive was going to become necessary. The Town had our own independent traffic study done that justified the signal. The developer also had their own traffic study done which also justified the signal. Once that was determined, plans began to be formulated to just how to make it happen. Essentially, it’s become a joint venture between the city and the developer. The project has been designed, it’s been approved and the contract has been let. Stancell Electric is the contractor. They were having some problems on lead times getting materials in but my understanding is they have all the materials in and their intent is to start construction within the next two or three weeks. Of course there will be some large holes dug for the foundation for the traffic signals themselves, some modifications to the traffic control cabinet will be added but the plan is to have it in place and fully operational by early March of next year.”
Davenport also reported to the board ongoing and upcoming developments and growth moving eastward on the by-pass which will stretch to the Greene Valley property currently under construction.
“We sat down last week with representatives from the Town of Tusculum and had a discussion about Greene Valley. Tusculum just like Greeneville is going to be experiencing some growing pains, because I feel that development is going to pull in a tremendous amount of additional traffic and just the people within that area. My understanding is that the State has already agreed that a traffic signal will be installed at what is now the main entrance to Greene Valley. I think they realize the volume of traffic there.”
