INTERIM DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS
Interim Director of Schools Dr. Chris Malone will begin his first full week on the job Monday
(Chris)
Chris was appointed interim Director last month, effective yesterday.
Right out of the gates, a meeting of the Education committee Monday afternoon at the Central Office.
LOCAL SCHOOLS VS TEACHER BONUS STIPULATION IN VOUCHER BILL
And while the voucher bill is now a reality in the state, how local school systems deal with it is to be determined.
Included in the bill is a one time $2,000 bonus to all teachers employed in K-12 schools in Tennessee. Critics of the bill pointed out that bonus would only be given to teachers if their local school district, such as Greeneville and Greene County, adopted a resolution stating they would like to participate in that provision of the law by June 1st. If they opt not to, teachers would not receive it.
An earlier proposal over that portion of the bill to give teachers a $2,000 raise instead, failed in committee.

This is the week you might hear this
(Phone)
If you don’t dial area code 423, even for local calls. Last August 5th, we were allowed to just continue to dial seven digits or go ahead and start with 4-2-3 during what was called a permissive dialing period.
But the mandatory 10-digit dialing officially begins this Wednesday, February 5th, as all local calls within the 4-2-3 area code will require dialing the area code.
Moving forward, beginning March 5th, new phone lines in this area can be assigned the new 7-2-9 area code, which would also require 10 digit dialing.
One other note, calling 9-1-1 will still only require three digits be dialed.
REPUBLICAN PARTY
After the election in November, the Greene County Republican Party held its monthly meeting to celebrate. The December meeting was weathered and sicknessed out. With a high of 63 tomorrow, weather will definitely not be a problem when the group meets at the party headquarters on Snapps Ferry Road. The February meeting Monday, which begins at 6 pm, will be their first since the inauguration.
