A Walters State Community College student reported a scam after contacting someone about a job listing.
The student told the Greene County Sheriff’s Department he saw the listing on a job hiring board at the campus and inquired about the job. The victim received an email stating the company worked with an orphanage. The victim was told he would receive a check. He was instructed to cash the check, keep $500, and then send the remaining money back on Cash App to the company.
The victim received a check for nearly $3,000. He was suspicious and took it to his bank, which verified the check was fraudulent. The victim did not lose any money due to the scam.
