A Greene County business owner was seriously injured in a mishap involving a hay spear earlier this week.
Jeremy Roberts, owner of Southland Equipment on the Asheville Highway, was delivering and picking up equipment on Tuesday to a customer in Virginia. The hay spear fell and pinned both Roberts and the customer down, and the bale spear went through Roberts’ midsection. The bale spear penetrated Roberts’ abdomen, but fortunately missed any vital organs. There was, however, significant injury to tissue and muscles in the area as well as some broken bones. Roberts was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center and underwent surgery. His wife Jennifer shared that he was doing well following the surgery, and was feeling some better.
A fundraiser has been planned to help raise funds to defray medical costs. Tammy Knapp Stanton, owner of the Funny Farm in Chuckey, has planned a fundraiser on September 29. Knapp said that vendors will be set up and that all proceeds will be donated to the Roberts family. Vendor slots are available as well. A silent auction will also be held.
