Animal cruelty was reported Thursday on the 900 block of Piney Grove Road after someone found their cow dead in a field next to the roadway.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene around 9:30 PM and spoke with the victim, who believes his cow got shot from the road. He said on Wednesday around 2:30 PM, the cow was alive and well by a pond in the field. The animal was not known to have any illnesses and was in good health, according to the owner.
On Thursday night, he received a call from a neighbor about the animal. After checking on the cow, he found it deceased and an abnormal amount of blood on the ground; the cow’s eye was also allegedly missing and there was blood splatter on an ear tag, unrelated to the blood on the ground. The owner told deputies the fence leading up to the cow along the road was damaged and run over.
Deputies stated the cow was in an area where it could have been shot from the road with a firearm. The details relating to the death were reportedly suspicious. According to the report, there was some type of head trauma involved. No suspects were known at the time of the report.
