The latest update from the National Weather Service in Morristown in regards to the heat and drought conditions says that Greene County is in a D1 – Moderately Dry Status.
The last time the county saw a moderate drought status in July was 2016 and before that was 2008. In 2008 the office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security was providing and assisting with agricultural water, potable water and hay support to the community. In 2016, there were several requests for agricultural water.
Forecasts are predicting little to no rainfall until at least mid to late next week. Temperatures are going to continue to be on the rise next week as well, with highs in mid to upper 90s. Some days could see a heat index in the lower 100s. The area has not experienced this type and length of heat wave since 2012.
The EMA Office is reminding citizens to take precautions in extreme heat.
- Avoid overexertion and drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
- Spend time in air conditioning and in the shade.
- Never leave people or pets alone in a closed car.
- Assist those who are at higher risk.
