Railsplitters defeat Pioneers in IVA semifinal

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — The Tusculum University men’s volleyball team dropped its Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (IVA) semifinal match to top seeded Lincoln Memorial on Friday (Apr. 12) night.

The Pioneers (7-23) were felled by the Railsplitters (20-5) by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-20.

LMU was led by Matthew Gentry’s 11-for-13 performance. Kohl Kutsch dished out 32 assists, while Griffin Wheatley landed two service aces for the Railsplitters. Wheatley also contributed eight digs. At the net, three teammates were credited with a pair of solo blocks: Gentry, Kutsch, and Eliel Salva Torres.

For Tusculum, both Deklan Wingo (12) and Colby Landry (10) reached double digits in kills. Rounding out the scoring were Joel Dubinsky (4), Tristan Blake (1), and Donovan Nye (1). Blake dished out 26 assists, while Dubinsky is responsible for the lone Pioneer ace. Taylor West is credited with a team-best six digs. Blake (2) and Jaden Bramhall (1) were tagged for the TU solo blocks.

Lincoln Memorial hit .392 as a team with 42 kills and 11 attack errors on 79 total attempts. Tusculum hit .128 with 28 kills, 18 errors, and 78 total attacks. The Railsplitters led the Pioneers in assists (39-27), service aces (4-1), digs (29-21), and total blocks (7-3).

Tusculum will face Maryville (Mo.) in the IVA Tournament third place match on Saturday (Apr. 13) at 1 p.m.
