The Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development reported this afternoon that Greene County’s unemployment rate for January was 4.7 percent, up from 3.9 percent in December.
Greene County’s rate a year ago was 5.0 percent.
The unemployment rate for January 2024 increased in 93 Tennessee counties, decreased in one county, and remained the same in one county. Williamson County had the lowest rate at 2.5 percent. Meigs, Perry and Cocke counties all had the highest rates in the state at 5.7 percent.
Holiday employment that ended at the start of the new year is one of the leading factors that caused an increase in county unemployment rates across the state. While state unemployment numbers are adjusted to consider the impacts of seasonal labor, county unemployment rates are not adjusted.
The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January was 3.5 percent, up slightly from 3.4 percent in December.
Unemployment data for February will be released later this month.
