Tusculum Beats Newberry 5-2 In SAC Opener

NEWBERRY, S.C. — Tusculum University opened its South Atlantic Conference women’s tennis schedule with a 5-2 victory over Newberry College at the Oakland Tennis Center

The Pioneers (4-3, 1-0 SAC) won the doubles point and took four of the six singles matches from the Wolves (5-1, 1-1 SAC), with two of the singles wins coming in three sets.

In doubles, Elodie Baechler and Valentina Loretz picked up a 6-3 win at flight one over Emma Arnal and Margarita Roshka. The Pioneers clinched the point at flight two, as Ylva Frafjord Landa teamed with Paulina Loretz for a 6-3 win over Ishita Singh and Rosie Harfield.

The Wolves evened the match with a win at flight four, but Johanna Palacio outlasted Renee Dorval 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at flight six and Landa earned a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Sofia Cardenas at flight two to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead in the match. Valentina Loretz clinched the win for Tusculum with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Arnal at flight one, and Baechler also picked up a victory as she defeated Roshka 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 at flight three.

Tusculum will return to SAC competition on Saturday, March 16 at Coker, beginning at 1 p.m.
