Blackmailing was reported from an Afton man Tuesday who sent almost $2,000 to a man posing as a Greene County Sheriff’s employee.
The man said he received a call from someone claiming to be an officer who stated the victim was going to get arrested for failing to show up for a DNA test. The victim hung up during the call but then called the number back. According to the report, the suspect picked up and stated they were the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, making the victim believe he was indeed an officer.
The suspect stated the man needed to pay a bond for $2,000 through an ATM machine at the Marathon near Snapps Ferry Road. The victim reportedly withdrew the funds and drove to Marathon. He allegedly sent the suspect money through a Bitcoin ATM machine before realizing he was scammed.
