A welfare check was conducted Tuesday afternoon on 2324 East Andrew Johnson Highway where a male was found passed out in his vehicle.
When officers arrived they found the vehicle still running and in drive. The driver, identified as Derek B. Millsap of Jonesborough, was slumped over and woken up. As the officer spoke with him his vehicle began to roll away, but he was able to stop it and placed it in park. Millsap reportedly had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.
He told officers he hadn’t been sleeping well and just got off work. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. After a search, officers found Gabapentin in his shirt pocket (usually used to treat epilepsy or taken for nerve pain) and 1 Clonazepam in his shorts pocket (used to treat seizures, anxiety, etc.).
He was charged with drug violations and driving under the influence.
