The Greeneville City School Board approved a vehicle purchase for the Family Resource Center, which will help the Director continue her efforts in helping homeless students and their families within the school district.
For 4 to 5 years the Director at the Family Resource Center, Amy Renner, has worked with many families that are either homeless and struggling, or in foster care, and has been helping them get back on their feet. According to her, there are 5,000 homeless people in Greene County. 35 students in GCS are currently homeless, with some living in tents.
Renner has used her personal vehicle to meet with families, transport students, bring them food, supplies, hygiene products, and help with emergency housing. This vehicle purchase will help Renner and Social Workers continue to assist students so they can remain engaged in school.
Not only will this purchase allow them to do more visits, carry more supplies, but also will be safer for the center as the vehicle will have the GCS logo on both side doors. Now families can identify the vehicle when employees are traveling. Amy Renner along with social workers and Family Support Attendance Interventionists made over 200 visits during the 2022-23 school year. With this vehicle the team can continue to try and make a difference in the lives of GCS families but in a safe way.
The center is notified of students who need this additional service as they are registered into the school system. Guidelines will be different for each family and in home visits are done to determine the needs. Amy Renner meets families where they are. For more information contact the schools Family Resource Center. This purchase is 100% covered by ARP Homeless funds and Title V.
