A Rogersville man, who was previously a math teacher and boys basketball coach at West Greene High School, turned himself in today on statutory rape charges in connection with a relationship with a student that allegedly occurred more than two years ago.

A report was initiated with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department in June 2021 concerning a possible inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old West Greene High School student and her teacher. After an extensive investigation, it was determined there was a sexual relationship between the student and Jacob Columbus Deal, who was 41 years old at the time of the report.

According to Greene County Director of Schools David McLain, Deal left the school system in May 2021.

On May 1, 2023, Detective Sgt. Chuck Humphreys presented his findings to the Greene County Grand Jury, which then issued an indictment for three counts of statutory rape by an authority figure and three counts of aggravated statutory rape.

Deal, who is now 43, turned himself in today at the Greene County Detention Center. His bond was set at $50,000, with an initial court date scheduled for September 15 at 9:00 AM in Greene County Criminal Court.

Detective Sgt. Humphreys said in a press release the investigation of the case was lengthy, due to multiple interviews and data collection from social media.
