The Greeneville City Council will have a public hearing today and consider approval to exceed the certified tax rate by $.21 for city residents.
The increase was approved unanimously on first reading in June. Since then, the State of Tennessee has issued a new tax rate based on recent reappraisals. The new rate from the state was set at $1.4971 per $100 of assessed value. The town however opted to raise the property tax rate by about 13%. The new rate will be $1.7071.
This increase will include $2.4 M for large capital projects with $200,000 going toward town hall repairs and maintenance projects. It will fund the purchase of the Jeff Woods Memorial Drive property for the possible site of a new Middle School, payment for the school system HVAC and energy efficiency projects, and just over $1.2 M in salary increases for town employees.
City Manager Todd Smith expressed this will help with staffing issues that departments have and also allows the town to keep the level of service that’s expected for the Town of Greeneville.
Also on the agenda is consideration of Special Event Application to close Davis Street from the intersection of West Summer Street to the intersection of West Clem Street for the Annual Community “Street Dance on Davis”, in conjunction with the Freedom Day “8th of August” Festival.
There’s also a Special Event Sign Request for the 2023 Jogging for Jess scholarship fundraiser, an application to close portions of Depot Street from Main to Irish for the Back to Depot Block Party, consideration to Purchase a Skid Steer and Attachments for the Landfill, and the purchase of Ammunition and Bullet Proof Vests for the Greeneville Police Department.
The meeting will be held at 4 PM in the G. Thomas Love Board Room at the Greeneville Energy Authority building.
