Greene County Commissioners will meet this afternoon and consider approving the proposed 2024 Fiscal Year Budget, which includes an almost 30% property tax increase.
The meeting will be held at the Greene County Courthouse at 6 PM but prior the commission meeting, there will be a public hearing beginning at 5 and another at 5:30 for residents to attend. This will be an opportunity for residents to ask questions and voice opinions on the state certified tax rate and proposed tax increase with the 2024 budget.
The Greene County Budget & Finance Committee met earlier this month to review the final submissions and requests from department heads. After this year’s countywide reappraisal, the State of Tennessee set Greene County’s tax rate at $1.27 and one-quarter cent per $100 of assessed value. The proposed budget sets the new tax rate at $1.65 per $100 of assessed value, for residents outside of Greeneville. This is about an almost $.38 increase. For residents inside city limits it will be set at $1.64.
Committee members say a pay scale for employees will help with longevity and the plan is to be able to keep them. Departments are losing employees to other counties and high paying jobs left and right. Many feel this tax increase allows Greene County to remain competitive, provide good pay for new employees, and make adjustments due to inflation.
