Motorists traveling on Newport Highway in Cocke and Greene Counties should be aware of an upcoming lane closure that will have an impact on traffic. Construction on a new four-lane section that will bypass the town of Newport will require the detour.
Beginning on Tuesday, June 20, the Highway 321 will be closed near the area where the four lane reduces to two lanes, about four miles on the Greeneville side of Newport. Traffic will be detoured around the construction work onto the Old Greeneville Highway, and will join the existing two lane road at the bridge over the French Broad River.
This traffic pattern is expected to be in place until December 2023. This schedule is contingent on favorable weather conditions. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution in this area as workers will be present.
