The Greeneville Board of Mayor and Aldermen are officially now the City Council as of yesterday’s votes to approve the changes in the Town of Greeneville‘s Charter Policy.
City Administrator Todd Smith will now be referred to as a City Manager moving forward. Changes also include extending the term length for the City Council to 4 years, realigning local elections to even years, including the water commission and school board, eliminating odd year elections. Additionally the dividing line between ward 1 and ward 2 on church street would be reconsidered for elections due to the population difference in wards.
Radio Greeneville News got some insight from State Representative David Hawk who said the TN Legislature and our legal staff worked closely with City Manager Todd Smith and Tow Attorney Ron Woods to ensure the language the council passed by resolution earlier this year, mirrored the language that the Legislature was being asked to pass. He added our House and Senate Legislative committees fully vetted the request from Greeneville. After very few questions, he said the charter changes for Greeneville passed unanimously through committees, the House and Senate floors, then went to the Governor for his signature.
There will be one more stray election in August but that will be the last of our odd year elections.
