Water conservation efforts and the discovery and shutoff of line breaks are helping with the strain on Greene County’s water supply.
Laura White, manager of the Greeneville Water Commission, said that the total wide system usage is down to about 10.5 million gallons per day. That’s down from a peak of over 12 million gallons per day on Wednesday. White said that the normal requirement for this time of year is between 7 and 8 million gallons per day.
Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison announced Wednesday afternoon that Greene County will be under a countywide emergency declaration that will curtail non-essential water usage. The declaration has only affected self-serve, automatic, and full-service car washes. Morrison said those restrictions will continue as long as necessary.
