Water service was restored overnight for thousands of Chuckey Utility customers, but the boil notice remains in effect for now.
Manager Tyson Lamb said that the service to the areas along Chuckey Pike, some side roads in that area, over to 11-E was turned back on for about 1200 customers. Other than a few scattered outages in the Horse Creek area, Lamb said water is back for the utility’s 4,900 customers.
Lamb said the system itself had only a few minor leaks, and that the vast majority of water loss was due to breaks of customers’ lines. One customer was discovered to have lost 200,000 gallons of water in a leak on his property. Lamb said the leak was bubbling up above ground and running into a nearby creek. The homeowner was aware of the leak, but had made no effort to contact the utility to have his water cut off. Lamb said another home near the Hensley Air Park had a leak that wasted almost 40,000 gallons while the homeowner was away on vacation. A neighbor had helped discover that leak.
The 200,000 gallon leak will cost that homeowner almost $1,400 on their water bill, as leaks on the homeowners side of the meter are their responsibility to shut off and fix.
Lamb said that they will still have water available at their offices until 5:30 PM today for those who need it. He added that samples are being taken and sent to the state, and results should come back in about 24 hours. At that time, the utility will decide if the boil notice can be lifted.
