Members of the Baileyton Board of Mayor and Aldermen discussed modernizing some of the town’s ordinances when it comes to livestock and alcohol during a workshop held Thursday night.
The ordinances were brought to the attention of the board when a local resident owning pigs discovered the town’s ordinance prohibits the ownership of swine in Baileyton. All other animals and livestock may be owned, but may not be kept within 1,000 feet of any residence or public road.
Baileyton officials said they were unaware of the ordinances or why they were in place, and elected to go about making changes.
Thursday night, members of the board said they would like to remove the regulation that prohibits owning pigs in Baileyton, and remove the prohibition of livestock within 1,000 feet of a public road or residence.
One line in the ordinance also prohibits the abuse of any “dumb animal or fowl,” and board members said they would like to remove the “dumb” qualifier in the regulation. Therefore, the regulation would prohibit abuse of any animal.
The board members also discussed making some changes to sections of the ordinance that would increase fines to $50 each day an offense continues involving aggressive dogs or dogs running at large.
The board also reached a consensus to remove a section of the ordinance that names specific dog breeds as “vicious dogs.”
The members of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen then discussed the town’s beer ordinance, which currently prohibits the sale of alcohol in any establishment with a pool table. The board members said they would like to see that section of the ordinance removed.
They also discussed changing a provision of the ordinance that records any present Beer Board member’s lack of voting as a no vote.
The board also said they would like to increase the permitted alcoholic percentage of beverages that can be sold in Baileyton from 5% to 10%.
