Agnes G. Childress, beloved mother and grandmother of Afton, Tennessee, passed away to enter heaven’s gates on Sept. 10, 2026, at Greeneville Community Hospital.
She was born in Middlesboro, Kentucky, on Nov. 23, 1939. She lived in Hazel Park, Michigan, for 25 years as a homemaker. Agnes moved to Wyoming County, West Virginia, for several years, then settled in Afton, Tennessee, where she lived until her passing.
She was a lifelong woman of faith. She loved to sing and play the guitar for many years at various churches from Michigan to Tennessee. She was a founding member of The Upper Room Church of Chuckey, Tennessee, and a 2009 graduate of Upper Room Bible College with a doctorate in theology.
Throughout Agnes’s life, she showed the love of Christ by sharing selflessly all that she could with those in need. She would pick up church members for Sunday services and midweek Bible studies for years without ever expecting anything in return. She was the example of a wonderful Christian mother. She will be greatly missed by her husband, children and loved ones.
Agnes is survived by her husband of 25 years, Floyd Childress of Afton, Tennessee; children, Carolyn (Dwight) Croy of London, Kentucky, Shirlene (Jack Morgan) of Mosheim, Tennessee, Jessie (Loretta) Roach of Bulls Gap, Tennessee, James (Sherry) Roach of Monterey, Tennessee, and Stephen Roach of Lititz, Pennsylvania; stepdaughters, Kathy (Bill) Renner of Greeneville, Tennessee, Debbie Jones of Jonesborough, Tennessee, and Sherry Childress; 12 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Loretta (Earl) of Caro, Michigan, and Shirley Micknass of Eastpointe, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha and Lewis Wilson; brother, Philip Raines; brother-in-law, Kenneth Micknass; and several aunts and uncles.
The graveside service will be Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Graceland Memorial Gardens in Afton, Tennessee. Pastor Jack Morgan will officiate the ceremony. Sons and grandsons will be honorary pallbearers.
Jeffers Funeral and Cremation Services will be in charge of services.
